Health Insurance California
This August, lawmakers have decided to increase the monthly premiums for the State Run Program Healthy Families. This program was originally designed to provide low cost health and dental insurance to children who are uninsured, and unable to qualify for Medi-Cal. It is expected that over 19,000 children will cease their enrollment in this program by July of next year, as a result of the increasing costs. This could result in a catastrophic increase in the number of uninsured children in California.
Along the same lines, the Medi-Cal system will also be facing some changes. It has been decided that those enrolled in the Medi-Cal (funded jointly by the State and Federal Governments) must renew their enrollment every six months in order to continue to receive benefits. Currently, Medi-Cal provides coverage to individuals who are disabled, currently diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer, pregnant, blind, or meet the other criteria demonstrating their inability to qualify for medical insurance via private insurance companies or Healthy Families. Losing the option of coverage via Medi-Cal will further add to the number of uninsured children and their families.
It is vital to address the importance of funding for these health initiative programs.
