Preventing High Cholesterol:

The current recommended level for a cholesterol is less than 200. This means that many people are finding out that their cholesterol levels are too high, and in some cases, dangerously high. However, you can lower your cholesterol quite easily, and even prevent your cholesterol levels from going too high just by adding some of the right foods to your diet.

Before beginning anything new, make sure to check with your doctor to ensure that you won't be endangering yourself.

Wonder Foods

There are many different foods that have been clinically proven to reduce cholesterol levels. However, these foods are usually not included in our daily lives, as many people prefer to grab a meal on the go.

Oatmeal has a unique ability to bind harmful fat before it can go to your bloodstream and flush it out of your system. A simple bowl of oatmeal once a day has even been proven to lower cholesterol by as much as 30 points, a healthy amount. Oat bran is also useful and may be more palatable to some.

Other foods, such as carrots, spinach and other green leafy vegetables can also promote a lower cholesterol level and assist you in maintaining good health. Onions and garlic are also a good way to lower your cholesterol levels.

Foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids promote "good" cholesterol, while attacking "bad" cholesterol levels. By simply adding a few servings of fish, such as salmon or tuna to your diet each week, you can drastically improve your cholesterol.

Dangerous Foods

On the same token, there are foods that should be avoided, or at the very least, greatly limited in your diet. These foods include anything that has saturated fat, such as fried food, many baked goods and other junk food. Avoiding saturated fat is the best way to keep your cholesterol at an acceptable level.

In addition to saturated fats, it is also important to read the labels on your favorite cuts of meat, and eggs. One large egg may have more cholesterol than you should have in one day! Current health guidelines state that we should have no more than 300 mg of cholesterol each day, cutting down on the amount of omelets that you can safely eat.

Instead of eating eggs, try adding egg substitutes to your diet, or remove the yolks. Egg whites do not contain harmful cholesterol, and are much safer to eat.

Eating right and exercising frequently are the best ways to prevent the dangerous risks of high cholesterol.
