Preventing Influenza and Colds:

Each year, everyone braces for influenza and cold season, hoping they won't get stuck with either virus. With fears of avian flu reaching all the corners of the world, preventing influenza is becoming even more important. Even the common cold can result in days of lost work and miserable suffering.

Many people immediately go for a flu shot each year, but recently, with a shortage of vaccine, this has been difficult. In addition, recent studies are pointing to the fact that the vaccination does not do much good, even for the elderly.

However, there are many ways that you can work on preventing the flu and a cold from striking you and your household. You can begin your preparations before the season hits, so that your immune system will be ready to do battle with whatever virus is thrust upon it.

Stock up on vitamins and minerals

Vitamin C is a wonderful preventative and is also useful if you have already come down with the flu or a cold. Start taking a supplement a few months before flu season starts to get your immune system jumpstarted. Minerals such as zinc are also very useful in helping to prevent influenza.

It is also important to eat enough foods that contain antioxidants, such as apples, oranges and other fruits high in vitamin C. This will allow your system to have a reserve when it comes to doing battle.

Get enough rest and keep away from stress

A tired body is a body that can't fight against disease. Make sure that you are getting at least seven hours of sleep each night to ensure that your immune system is completely balanced.

Excessive stress can also weaken your immune system, leaving it vulnerable. However, it can be very difficult to completely avoid stress, especially if you have a busy schedule. Try scheduling in some quiet time each day so that you can recharge your batteries.

Don't forget to wash your hands

In a recent study, volunteers had a dye placed under their noses that was only visible in black light. They were then instructed to go about normal tasks in a confined area. A few minutes later, the black lights were turned on, and the entire room had been practically covered in the dye. It is extremely important to wash your hands frequently during flu and cold season to avoid the spread of germs.

If you work in an office environment, it is also essential to keep either alcohol wipes or gel nearby to disinfect shared phones and equipment. You would be surprised how many germs you can come into contact with on a daily basis.
