Are Ergonomics Really That Important?:

Recently, small business owners have been encouraged to provide their employees with proper ergonomic equipment. Faced with some expensive decisions, many of these employers are left to wonder if ergonomics really are important.

In short, yes, ergonomics can greatly reduce the risk of repetitive stress injuries as well as worker complaints. It is much easier to spend a little more money now, than to have to pay higher premiums on group health insurance, due to an increase in worker health complaints.

Why are ergonomics so important?

First, when someone is forced to sit in the same relative position for eight hours, performing the same tasks over and over, such as typing, they can quickly become sore. Over time, this soreness can spread and worsen, and before long, become an actual injury.

It may be a good idea to put yourself in your employee's shoes for a day. Try spending eight hours straight in the same chair, performing their duties. Chances are, at the end of your experiment, you'll be stiff and sore, if you have not provided them with proper ergonomic equipment.

What kind of ergonomic equipment do I need to buy?

One of the most important devices that should be ergonomically correct is your employee's chair. This is where they will be sitting all day, and it should not be a bad experience. There are many different factors that go into finding the right ergonomic chair. The type of chair you select will depend on the work that your employees are doing.

Since chair comfort is relative, it is also a good idea to involve your employee's in the chair selection process. What may be very comfortable to one employee may be quite painful for another.

After chairs, we move on to actual office equipment. This can range anywhere from keyboards to staplers, depending on the types of work that are required in your office. If you have data entry or secretarial employees, an ergonomic keyboard and mouse pad are extremely helpful in reducing carpal tunnel.

Likewise, if you have employees that spend a great deal of time stapling or doing file chores, making their environment as ergonomically friendly as possible is the best thing to do.

Ergonomically correct equipment may not be cheap, but over time, it will accrue in value as you end up with happier employees that are not suffering from costly repetitive stress injuries.
