The Importance of Iron and Zinc
Iron and Zinc are two minerals that are extremely useful in maintaining and achieving good health. Although you may not think that minerals are essential for proper immune system functions, your body cannot do without either one.
Iron: What it does
Iron is useful in treating depression, menorrhagia, restless leg syndrome, pre-surgical preparation and post-surgical recovery, canker sores, celiac disease, as well as providing essential support for pregnancy, both during and after.
Zinc: What it does
Zinc is responsible for repairing wounds, growth of the body, preserving eyesight, improving immune system response, cell reproduction, fertility maintenance, and minimizing the duration of colds. It can be of use in treating acnes, night blindness, male infertility, Crohn's disease, canker sores, diabetes, macular degeneration, arthritis and tinnitus.
Iron: How to get it
Iron is found in two forms: heme which is absorbable and found mainly in oysters, fish, meat and poultry, and non-heme which is found in dried fruit, leafy green vegetables, wine and molasses. You can also find iron in several supplements.
Zinc: How to get it
Zinc is found in meat, poultry and may be present in fortified foods.
Iron: Am I deficient?
Vegans are most commonly deficient in iron, but marathon runners, patients suffering from ulcers, and aspirin takers may also be deficient. If you suffer from a condition that cause malabsorption, you may also be deficient.
Zinc: Am I deficient?
Unfortunately, the average American does not get enough Zinc in their diet. If you are noticing white marks or ridges on your finger nails, you may have a zinc deficiency. There are also tests that your doctor can perform to see if you are suffering from a deficiency of zinc in your diet.
Both of these minerals are powerful in helping your body to function correctly. Try to make sure that you are eating enough foods rich in both. If you have any doubts, or if you fall into a risk group for a deficiency, it is a good idea to check with your doctor to make sure that you are getting enough iron and zinc in your diet.
