Preventing Sinus Infections:

Sinus infections affect a large segment of the world's population and they are unfortunately becoming more common. As more people take antibiotics for these infections, they are building a resistance to the very drugs that are intended to help them. The result? Many people are drastically narrowing their antibiotic options due to a built-in resistance.

There are many ways to prevent sinus infections from occurring. If you are a frequent sufferer of sinus infections, and have at least one every few months, you may have an underlying food allergy that may be the culprit behind your problems. As always, before trying anything new, you should check with your physician to make sure that it is right for you.

Is it really a sinus infection?

Before we get into preventing sinus infections, it is important to separate their symptoms from other common maladies, such as allergies. If you suffer from sinus headaches, but your discharge is clear in color, you may simply have a nasty allergy. Before you rush off to get a prescription, make sure your doctor rules out an allergy problem.

You may also be suffering from a change in the barometer, instead of an actual infection if you simply have sinus pressure without any drainage. Sinus infections are usually accompanied by sinus pain and pressure, colored discharge, foul breath and a feeling of malaise.

Keep up the Vitamin C

One of the best methods of preventing a sinus infection is to make sure that you are getting enough vitamin C. Many people have successfully warded off recurrent sinus infections, simply by adding more vitamin C to their diet.

Stay Away from Milk Products

Milk tends to produce more mucus, especially if you have an underlying allergy to milk products. If you get a film in your mouth after eating cheese or drinking milk, chances are you may have an allergy to it. Continued exposure to this allergen can result in recurrent sinus infections.

Keep it Moist

Dry sinuses can be very painful. Try adding a humidifier to your home if you suffer from frequent sinus infections. It may be able to prevent them from recurring, and will help your sinus cavities get the moisture they need to prevent dryness. You may also benefit from an air purifier if your sinus infections are allergy related, or simply occur too often.
