Natural Ways to Sleep Better:

Do you sit up at night, longing for sleep, and watching the sun rise? Insomnia is quickly becoming a widespread problem and it can be a difficult cycle to break. However, there are many ways that you can fall asleep naturally and improve the quality of your sleep once you get there.

It is a good idea to check with your physician to make sure that you are not suffering from any conditions that produce insomnia, or that cause you to wake up several times during the night. Once you have ruled these out, you can begin implementing some proven techniques that will have you sleeping like a baby.

Turn Off Distractions

When you can't sleep, the natural reaction is to turn on the television, read a book or go online. However, this can actually keep you from falling asleep. As you watch or read, your brain becomes active, making it hard for it to "shut-off" when you're ready to go to bed.

If you like to read or watch tv before going to bed, try to stop at least one hour before turning in. This gives your brain a chance to settle down from stimulation. If you find that you are having difficulty, try some meditation techniques to feel in the gap that is normally crammed with entertainment.

Warm Up Your Feet

While it may sound silly, cold feet actually keep many people up at night. You can try wearing extra-warm socks to bed to assist your body in falling asleep quickly. Something as insignificant as chilly feet is actually enough to keep you awake all night. You can also try adding a hot water bottle at the foot of your bed if you still find that your feet are cold.

Toss Your Alarm Clock

Alarm clocks that suddenly jolt you awake can contribute to sleep disturbances. This is very true if you get up at the same time every day. Your body begins to anticipate the jolt that is about to hit and you may find yourself waking up early, even hours before your alarm is set to go off.

Instead, try to find an alarm clock that has a graduated alarm, from very soft to a normal volume level. There are also alarm clocks that mimic an actual sunrise, allowing you to wake up gradually as your room fills with light.

Although sleeping shouldn't have to be work, sometimes it will take a little extra effort on your part to make sure that your routine is conducive to a good night's rest. Instead of trying sleeping pills, take a chance on some of the natural remedies mentioned above to see if you can't beat your problem the natural way.
