Insurance
We all know the importance of having insurance to cover our homes and cars, but what about our health? These days, a trip to the emergency room for a couple of stitches and a set of x-rays can set you back thousands of dollars. What happens in the case of a catastrophic accident or illness? You can jeopardize all of your assets with one major surgery, unless you protect yourself with medical insurance.
Medical insurance can be provided to employees through a group plan, or may be purchased by individuals or families if there is no company plan offered or if they are self-employed. Depending on the medical plan you choose, trips to the doctor, pharmacy, and hospital will be covered by co pays or deductibles. In the event of a major accident or illness, these plans will ensure that you have a “maximum out of pocket”, and you will not have to worry about losing all that you have worked for should you or your loved ones suffer from a chronic illness or extended hospital stay.
Most comprehensive plans will offer co pays for things like your doctor visits and prescriptions, or they will offer negotiated or discounted rates for these sort of things until you meet your deductible. Utilizing contracted providers will ensure the lowest rates possible. Once your deductible is met, you may then have coinsurance of a certain percentage, until you reach your maximum annual copayment. At that point, you will have 100% coverage for your in-network eligible services, and may only have to pay your co pays for prescriptions and doctor co pays thereafter. Some plans, including many of the Health Savings Account plans, will offer 100% coverage after meeting your deductible.
Major Medical plans are available to those only seeking coverage for accidents or illnesses requiring hospitalization. Many people will opt for these plans if they are looking for the lowest possible premiums, and are not concerned about paying for the day-to-day medical care out of pocket. Another method of reducing monthly costs would be choosing a plan with higher deductible, coinsurance, and out of pocket maximums.
