Arthritis and Health Insurance:

While osteoarthritis may not necessarily preclude you from purchasing health insurance, more serious forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, may complicate the issue. In some cases, complications arising from your arthritis may not be covered by your insurance policy if you have a pre-existing condition, even if it is osteoarthritis.

There are specific concerns that you will need to address regarding an insurance policy before finalizing your decision.

Orthopedic Treatments

Arthritis typically requires the treatment of a specialist and it is vital to make sure that these visits will be covered by your insurance company. Orthopedic treatments, and or surgery may also be necessary. Since these treatments are quite expensive, coverage is typically necessary.

You will also need to make sure that regular visits to your primary care physician will be covered. Even if your arthritis is not currently severe, the chances of the condition worsening are usually severe. Frequent visits to your physician can help you stay on top of arthritis and successfully treat the condition.

Medications

There are many new medications on the market that are successfully in treating the many forms of arthritis. Unfortunately, these treatments can be expensive. It is important to make sure that you will have some sort of prescription drug coverage with your insurance plan.

There are also new injections and treatments for rheumatoid arthritis that have been greatly beneficial in treating the degenerative disease. These treatments are usually done on an outpatient basis, and it is important to find a plan that will provide you with these options.

If you cannot get prescription drug coverage with your current plan, you may be able to get a drug discount card that can pick up where your insurance policy leaves off.

Chiropractic and Alternative Therapies

Some forms of arthritis can be eased by regular visits to a chiropractor. If your health plan does cover chiropractic care it is important to find out how many visits will actually be covered. Some plans do limit chiropractic care to less than ten yearly visits, so it is important to known in advance how often you can avail yourself of this treatment.

Other alternative therapies, such as LED light treatments, injections and other forms of treatment may also assist arthritis sufferers, but may not be covered by regular health insurance policies. If you need this type of treatment, try to find a policy that will provide coverage in this area.
