Autism and Health Insurance:

Parents of children who have been diagnosed with autism can have a difficult time trying to find a health insurance policy. If you have not insured a young child before the age of two, when signs of autism commonly appear, you will then have to find an insurance policy that will deal with a pre-existing condition of autism. In addition, as your child ages, their policy may only cover them until they are eighteen. At this point, you may need to find a new insurance policy that will accept a pre-existing condition.

Although it can be difficult to find an insurance policy for any pre-existing condition, autism may result in the need for long-term care, making it a unique situation to surmount. However, with careful planning and by taking the time to find the right policy, you should be able to find an insurance company that will meet your child's needs.

Here are common areas of coverage that you will need if you have an autistic child:

Coverage for Specialists

Your average family doctor may not have the necessary skills to successfully treat your autistic child. It is a confusing condition and requires the treatment of a specialist for the best results. You will need to find an insurance policy that will allow you access to necessary specialists.

If you have an HMO, do some research to make sure that qualified autism specialists are included in-network on your policy. If they are not, you may need to find a PPO plan that will offer you more options in this area.

Coverage for Alternative Therapy

Alternative therapy is making great progress in treating autism, but it may not always be covered by your insurance policy. If this method of treatment seems to be the best fit for your child, you will need to make sure that your insurance policy will cover these treatments, to lessen your out-of-pocket expenses.

In addition to alternative therapy, certain programs may also be beneficial for autistic patients. If you are interested in learning more about what your insurance policy will and will not cover in this area, it is a good idea to discuss your options with your insurance representative. Taking the time now to find a best fit for your policy and your child's needs will decrease the amount of money you will need to spend later on.

Coverage for Long-Term Care

If you are unable to care for your autistic child at home, you may need to place them in a long-term care facility that specializes in handling autistic patients. These care options are expensive and if possible, you should attempt to find a plan that will offer long-term care coverage. Even if you plan to take care of your child in your home, you will need to make sure that if something happens to you, or you are unable to continue providing this care due to an illness that your child will be taken care of appropriately.
