Thyroid Diseases and Health Insurance:

If you are currently suffering from a disease of the thyroid, and you do not have health insurance, it can be difficult to obtain a new policy. Insurance companies normally will not cover pre-existing conditions, but with careful searching, you can find coverage for your needs.

There are specific areas of coverage that you will need to have if you do have a thyroid disease. This coverage can end up saving you quite a bit of money as you treat your disease and enable you to have access to treatment that would otherwise be too expensive.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Most diseases of the thyroid need to be treated with some form of medication. This can be expensive if you do not have prescription drug coverage. Before selecting a plan, make sure that there is at least some coverage provided for your necessary medications. You may end up only having a percentage of your medication covered, but this will help over the long term.

You can also obtain a prescription drug discount card that works very much like a health insurance prescription drug benefit. These cards usually have a monthly fee and provide a discount on your prescriptions. You will need to make sure that one of these cards is available in your area and that your pharmacy will accept the card.

Experimental Treatments

Most insurance policies do not offer coverage for experimental treatments, especially for a pre-existing condition, but there are some available. These new treatments can greatly assist people suffering from thyroid diseases. If possible, this is an area of coverage that should not be overlooked.

Specialist and Physician Coverage

You may need to see a specialist to properly treat you thyroid disease. Some insurance policies, such as HMO plans, restrict your ability to select your own specialist. In this case, you would need to have your primary care physician refer you to a specialist in order for your plan to cover the visit.

It is also a good idea to see how many doctor visits per year your plan will cover. Normally, a health insurance plan will cover two visits per year, but your condition may necessitate more frequent visits. If you can find a plan that will provide coverage for these visits, you can end up with significant savings.

Although a pre-existing condition makes it difficult to be selective when searching for health coverage, making sure that your needs will be met can go a long way towards providing you with the care you need.
