Universal Health Care Explained
Universal health care is on the rise in the United States while socialized health care systems are predominate in foreign countries such as Europe and Canada. These socialized health care plans offer lower prescription prices, which is why many Americans are seeking pharmacies over the border to get their prescriptions filled by mail. First introduced by Former President Bill Clinton, he was met by bad feelings from both sides and universal health care became the source of much heated debate.
Socialized Health Care vs. Universal Health Care
Socialized health care is intended to be a government program for low income and disabled people, similar to Medicaid. These types of plans are commonly referred to as “single-payer systems.” However, universal health care is not limited to a certain group or demographic of people, but instead, available to all citizens.
The American Health Care Debate
There is much debate over whether a universal health care program would be good for America, with both sides riding on the nightmare which would be implementation to the higher taxes used to pay for the plan. Taxes in countries boasting socialized medicine alone are bordering on 80% in some cases, which is highly unacceptable to most Americans.
The quality of care is another concern since everyone is provided the same amount of care, regardless of race, creed or social status, which leaves many people feeling they are not getting the type or amount of care they feel is suitable. Abuses occur daily in countries with socialized medicine and waiting lists are a common place, which can drag out for weeks.
Of course, the main benefit for universal health insurance is that every citizen of the United States would be able to receive some form of care even if they could not afford it. However, this goal is extremely lofty and would not be easily attainable. With Social Security wavering, chances of implementing universal health care diminish. With the problems of waiting lists, lack of quality care and the outrageous income tax, the plan would have difficulty gaining majority backing from Americans. While this program is not feasible, it is important to find a health plan with the coverage you need at a price you can afford.
